Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week I would like to begin by asking you to complete our short evaluation survey, which you will receive by email on Monday. Based on your feedback last year, we have redesigned and shortened the form and request that you spend a few minutes completing it. We use this valuable feedback to further improve the quality of education for your children.

We received only 1 late application for the advisory board position. We have therefore decided to postpone the election for this critical position until the start of the academic year. We will release the information again in September to allow people to have more time to consider if they would like to be involved. Meantime if you would like to find out more about the advisory board, or what the role entails, please contact our current advisory board members.

This week has been another crazy week at SIS, last Friday we saw the Dream Factory Final. Massive congratulations to all the contestants taking part in the final and thank you to the primary team and Mr Luis, who led the experience with tenacity.

On Monday our M4 musicians put on a small concert of songs they have been writing, adapting and rehearsing for our EC1 – P1 students. I would like to thank all the staff who supported the event, the M4 students and especially Mr Wix for allowing our students the opportunity to perform and providing our smallest students with a music concert!

This week the primary team have been hard at work yet again, helping prepare our P3 and P4 students for their show, ‘We are Monsters’. This lively show played to a full house yesterday and is fully booked for tonight. I would also like to draw your attention to the P5 and P6 show next Wednesday, where they will be performing Shrek! I have been listening to all the rehearsals as I have walked across the playground and I can tell you we are in for a real treat!

This week our MYP and Diploma students have been working hard focusing on their end of year assessments, whilst our M5 students have been away from school on work experience. I would like to thank all parents who have offered work experience placements for the M5 students. This experience is invaluable for them and the community.

The main focus for the primary school this week (along with show preparations) has been the swimming galas. Well done to everyone concerned. It has been a busy 3 days with P1 and P2 gala taking place on Tuesday, P3 and P4 on Wednesday and P5 and P6 on Thursday. I was very proud of all our swimmers and thrilled by the manner in which everyone took part and celebrated together. Massive congratulations to the primary PE team and Miss Lola for orchestrating the 3 days of events.

Tonight we have the second ‘We are Monsters’ show, the Primary sleepover and the PTA white party. On Saturday there is a live music event at Floria Rústico. I wish you a fun packed and enjoyable weekend.

Best wishes

Jak Kearney

Rugby Special!

On Monday 18th June we are delighted to host International rugby players Josh van der Flier and Sean O´Brien, who will be holding a rugby session and talk from 3.00-4.00pm on the pitch. Josh and Sean both play for European Rugby Champions Leinster, as well as Six Nations Champions, Ireland. Sean has also represented the British & Irish Lions on two tours in 2013 & 2017. Parents and students are invited to watch the session and will have the opportunity to meet the players.

Return of library resources

There are still lots of overdue items, please assist your children to find and return all library resources (books and DVDs) this coming week.

Unless they are about to leave SIS, students from P6 upwards and parents, on behalf of younger students, are welcome to borrow books over the summer, however these must be checked out properly at the library desk after returning any overdue items.

SIS Alumni Celebration / Doug Stewart memorial football match & 1st SIS Alumni  vs Staff netball competition

On June 28th, SIS will be hosting the 5th Alumni Reunion on campus. The later date this year is in response to requests from alumni who were unable to make the May celebration last year. Also, we are trying something a little different and will hold the event around the SIS chiringuito and swimming pool.

Parents of SIS alumni, please let your daughter or son know about this event.

There will be a barbecue with drinks starting from 5.30pm, and a bus ready to take revelers on later in the evening.

We will also be hosting the Doug Stewart Memorial Staff vs Alumni football tournament, and our first Staff vs Alumni netball competition. Kick off at 4.30pm. (Players please arrive at 4pm)

This comes at the end of a staff training day, which of course also means there will be a full complement of staff present at the start of the event. Alumni only: Please sign up on the SIS Alumni FB page if you want to play in the football or netball events. https://www.facebook.com/events/213177149455854/

Alumni are also, of course, welcome and encouraged to come along and support the football and netball even if you don´t want to play. There have also been rumours of the staff band playing an impromptu set later in the evening!

More details will follow, but please confirm if you are planning to attend by clicking the FB event link. The event is open only to all former SIS students.

Rock Camp

Don’t miss out on this year’s Rock Camp 2018!
Now in its fourth year, this unique music programme has been consistently and widely praised by all for its scope and impact on the participants. The kids – from 8 to 16 – not only receive pro-level vocal training, an introduction to an instrument, photo sessions, video shoots and exciting musical group activities, but they also get to record in a professional sound studio under the supervision of a real record producer – and in the end receive a beautifully produced CD of their recordings. Simply put, there’s no other summer camp quite like this one!

New this year! Rock Camp is thrilled to include for the first time, daily drum workshops with SIS drum teacher, Paul Skelton – and music from The Greatest Showman! It’s going to be the best summer camp ever!

Message from Emma Butler

Last week I was invited to lead the category 3, two and a half day regional workshop on Inquiry for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in Florence. The workshop received great feedback. Being invited to and leading such workshops, not only helps raise the profile of our great school, but enables me to connect with and continue to connect with other educators from around the world.

Whilst in Italy I took advantage of the opportunity and spent Monday at the International School of Europe Milan, one of our Inspired partners. Thank you to Stephen Rogers and his team for making me so welcome. I know that Sotogrande and IS Milan will enjoy working together.

Another golfing success in primary

Well done to Constanze in P5! On June 3rd she won the Baden-Württembergische Rangliste in Germany for her age group (10 years and under).

Dream Factory

On Friday evening we held our Dream Factory Final. Over 33 acts from P3 to P6 showed their amazing talents in different genres. Over 100 tickets sold and a preliminary profit of 1200€ for our charity Covadomar in Portugal. This amount will make a difference to many lives. In the words of Mr Luis, everyone was a winner!

A big thank you to everyone who supported this event and a special thank you to Mr Luis and Miss Maureen.

Shrek – 20th June

Tickets are available from students at the school gate morning and afternoon. Don’t miss this amazing performance!

Language and Literature News

Congratulations to Alexandra Eleferenko in D1 for winning the Russian Total Dictation competition. She was victorious, competing globally to write accurately after listening carefully to the dictated text. Alexandra was awarded a certificate for her achievements. Well done, Alexandra!

Anthropology talk for M4 students

Social and cultural anthropology is a field that few students at Sotogrande would have considered as a career path. Jean Sassoon’s visit to an M4 class on the 14th May might well have changed that. Read on to learn more about the fascinating stories she shared with our students.

Russian News

We are very proud of our D1 student, Miss Alexandra Eleferenko, who was presented with her certificate on Saturday 9th June for the best result in Andalucía among more than 100 participants in TOTAL DICTATION.

Also on that day, another SIS multilingual student in M3 took part in a children’s production of the classic Russian play WOE FROM FIT. Gleb Kirsanov had a leading role in the performance, which was organised by the Olga Pakhomova’s Educational Centre in Marbella. The play was well received by the local Russian-speaking community.

 Film Festival in Spanish

M2 Spanish Language Acquisition students presented their films which were written and filmed using only the Spanish language. The aim is to develop communication skills using the language in a creative and motivating context. At the same time students developed their social skills and directed their own learning targets by creating and planning the movie. M2 students presented their films in the theatre and a jury made up of different members of SIS awarded the prizes.

Boarding House News

More than 20 boarding students cooled off last Saturday at Bahía Park in Algeciras. Water slides, wave pools, and a half-time ice cream were what we came for. And as temperatures begin to soar in southern Spain, we were lucky enough to get some occasional cloud cover too!
