School Newsletter 27.10.2017 img

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I truly cannot believe that the first half term has just come to an end. Over the last 8 weeks we have achieved so much as a community.  Our students have represent Spain in the F1 in Schools finals in Kuala Lumpur, represented Great Britain in the World Padel championships, we have officially launched our school of technical development with Atletico de Madrid, covered our swimming pool, celebrated a wonderful musical event at the Back to School party with our community, run school trips and completed an outstanding evaluation visit from 3 globally recognized awarding bodies.

Over the weekend, we hosted 3 visiting school groups from the UK. Our netball students played in a 5-hour tournament on Sunday competing against teams from the visiting schools.  I would like to thank the members of staff who gave up their time over the weekend and the students who participated.

.

This week has been another busy week with Parent Teacher meetings in primary. These critical meetings allow feedback to occur on the first 8 weeks of school, to share and celebrate achievements and highlight areas to develop moving forward. Thank you for taking the time to meet with our staff.

On Wednesday our M4 and M5 students departed for the Paris trip.  They landed safely on Wednesday and have been enjoying the cultural experiences that Miss Bosson and Miss Rocio have planned for then.

This week we have had 2 groups of students attend auditions for The Voice in the UK. At the weekend our first group went for auditions in London and our second group attended auditions in Birmingham towards the end of the week.  We wish the best to all of the students and will keep you posted with any updates.

Following the opening ceremony hosted by Jason Floyd yesterday, today our ACES and Junior ACES golf students begin the Sotogrande International Young Talents Trophy at Almenara Golf Club. They will be competing against top junior golfers from around the world. We wish them the best of luck.

Over the half term holiday week we have a number of activities ongoing.  Our family trip to Asni has created much interest and we have 26 members of our community travelling to Morocco to visit.  In addition there will be a MUN trip to Malmo, Sweden for 7 students. Once again I would like to recognise and congratulate staff for giving up their time to create these wonderful opportunities.

Finally I would like to give you advance notice that after the holiday we will be selling tickets for the PTA Fireworks night, which will take place on Friday 10th November from 7pm until 10pm.  Tickets can be purchased at the main gate on Wednesday and Thursday next week from 3.30pm and from reception at all other times.  The cost is 5€, under 3’s are free, but if they wish to take part in the children’s activities they will need to buy a ticket. If any of you are willing and able to help at the event, please liaise with the PTA by emailing pta@sis.gl

Additionally for this event, I would like to remind you that all students in M2 and below will only be admitted when accompanied by an adult.

I wish you a wonderful holiday,

Jak Kearney.

Exciting opportunities to join the SIS F1 in Schools team

We launched F1 in Schools programme last September and an exciting year of design, engineering and competitions led to Team Stallion, the winning team, going to Malaysia to represent SIS and Spain in the World Finals.

The F1 in Schools challenge is an incredible STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programme, which gives participants access to a real-life context competition that mirrors the roles and responsibilities of an actual Formula 1 Racing Team. Designing, constructing and racing the fastest miniature Formula 1 Car of the Future is all part of the project as well and raising sponsorship and creating and marketing their own ‘brand’.

School Newsletter 27.10.2017 img
Stallion Racing, the youngest team to qualify for the F1 in Schools World Final, did our school proud in Kuala Lumpur, and came back full of ideas for improvement and knowledge about the competition to share with next year’s team.

So now it’s time to recruit the new team! We are looking for dynamic highly motivated students who have a passion for success, to represent SIS in this exciting project.

The 2018 final will be held in Singapore, and our aim is to not only to qualify but to win!

Being a part of this enormous global event gives successful applicants exclusive access to:

  • Formula 1 staff and engineers
  • Opportunities in education and training (The Williams Academy)
  • A global network of schools, educators and industry specialists
  • The F1 Singapore Night race.

The project requires a Team Leader, Marketing Manager, Engineering Manager, Social Network Manager, Finance Manager and a Team Pilot (selected later this year).

Do you have what it takes to be one of the 2018 Management Team?

Apply by email to Mr. Allen (mallen@sis.gl). Create a statement detailing which role(s) you wish to apply for and why you would be the ideal candidate for the job.

We also need team support, so those unsuccessful in their application for team management roles, can still be involved and gain knowledge to greatly increase their chances of moving into a management position for future competitions.

The deadline for applications is Friday the 3rd November 2017.

Good luck!

Primary News

Message From Emma Butler

As we come to the end of our first half term 2017 / 2018, I would like to congratulate all our students and teachers for a wonderful start to the new school year. During the last eight weeks primary teachers have created motivating and engaging activities, which have inspired our students to work hard and progress well in their learning. Last week whilst on a ‘safari’ walkabout, our teachers reflected on all the learning journeys that were clearly evident across all the classrooms and learning spaces within our primary buildings.  It was great to see the classrooms filled with wonderful work, which celebrated both the students’ learning and their understanding.

Improving our play facilities

The primary student council are trying to improve playground activities. One idea is to have a quiet area, and we would like to have various toys for the children to play with.

School Newsletter 27.10.2017 img

We are therefore asking for donations such as Lego, reading books in different languages, toy cars, board games. Please bring to the Timber building. Thank you.

EC1 students fInish their first Unit of Inquiry at SIS

As they come to the end of their first unit of inquiry,
‘Who we are: starting school’, the EC1 team have been reflecting back on all that our youngest students have achieved and learned. It has been lovely watching them over this half term as they have been settling in and learning about life at SIS.

On Wednesday P3, P4 and 24 students from Swans School in Marbella enjoyed a morning of team games. This event was specifically organised for them with the aim for them to show how they can work together, make new friends and enjoy sports whilst having fun. All the students who participated demonstrated our school values of being principled and committed. Thank you to all who took part in the event and the PE department for organising such a successful event.

P5/P6 Duathlons

Well done to Isabella R, Hannah, Alma, Lucy, James, Manolo, Sam and River who represented SIS Primary in the Interschool Duathlon event in Marbella on Wednesday. Netball

On Sunday the SIS netball team took part in a 5 hour-long tournament. They were the only International school involved and played extremely well against the visiting English teams, securing 3rd place out of 6 teams. This was an under-16s tournament, meaning the majority of the players were older than our team members; nevertheless the SIS team embraced the opportunity to play against successful teams and their hard-work, commitment and team effort was inspiring and well noticed.

Players of the match: Matt Cronin and Mia Petersen

Congratulations to all.

Boarding House News

A small contingent of brave boarders departed for Ronda last Saturday, October 21st. There they got the chance to scale the cliffs near the famous Puente Nuevo in safe conditions on a Via Ferata (Iron Way) with Sport Mountain Adventures.

Students faced their fears as they climbed the sides of the canyon which cuts through the ancient city that is also the site of the oldest bull fighting ring in Spain. Congratulations to all the M1-M5 boys who faced this challenged and succeeded in the end!
